This policy explains what personal information crohns.org.uk ("we", "us") collects, why, and what your rights are under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Who we are
crohns.org.uk is run by the owner of the crohns.org.uk domain. You can reach us using our contact form.
Information we collect
When you read the website
We count page views with our own analytics system, which doesn't use cookies. For each page view it records:
- the page viewed and the time
- where the visit came from (for example "Google" or another website)
- the country (worked out by our network provider; we don't see or keep your IP address)
- the type of device (mobile, tablet or desktop)
- whether the page was actually used (for example scrolled or clicked), so we can tell people from automated bots
To count unique visitors, we combine your IP address and browser type with a random code that changes every day, and keep only the scrambled result. The daily code is then deleted, so we can't link your visits across days or work out who you are.
We also record automated visitors (search engines and other bots) by their published name, such as "Googlebot".
Advertising and Google Analytics
This website shows adverts from Google AdSense and uses Google Analytics. When you first visit, a message from Google asks for your consent. If you agree, Google uses cookies and similar technology to personalise ads and measure how the site is used, and Google is responsible for that data under its own privacy policy. If you don't agree, ads are not personalised. See our cookie policy for details and how to change your choice.
When you contact us
If you use the contact form, we keep your name, email address and message so we can reply. We delete personal details a year after the conversation has ended, unless we need to keep them longer for legal reasons.
When you subscribe to our emails
If you sign up for email updates, we send one email asking you to confirm, and only add you to the list once you click the link in it. We keep your email address and the dates you subscribed and confirmed. Every email has an unsubscribe link. When you unsubscribe, we stop sending you emails straight away.
How we use it
- To run and improve the website and decide what new information to write (legitimate interests)
- To reply to messages (legitimate interests)
- To send emails you have asked for (consent, which you can withdraw at any time)
- To show adverts and measure how the site is used with Google's services (consent, through Google's message)
We never sell personal information. We don't use your contact details or email address for advertising.
Who else is involved
We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:
- Cloudflare: network security and fast delivery of pages
- Railway: hosting for the website and its database
- GitHub: storage of the website's content (no visitor data)
- Resend: sending our emails (confirmation emails, newsletters and replies to messages)
- Google: advertising (AdSense) and site statistics (Analytics), as described above
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
Your rights
You have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. You can also object to how we use it. To make a request, please use our contact form.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
